fāgogo was not created from theory. It was born from loss, urgency and responsibility.  Our deep personal journey rooted in faith, service, culture, and love.

My father lives with Alzheimer’s dementia. He was formally diagnosed four years ago, though we began noticing the changes much earlier, the lapses in memory, the shifts in mood, the agitation that would come without warning.

For a period, he lived in a rest home. He become increasingly lethargic and disconnected, almost absent in spirit. It was confronting. After much prayer and reflection, I made the decision to bring him home and care for him full-time. It was clear what needed to be done.

My father was born and raised in Samoa. As a young man, he provided for his family through traditional handicrafts and fishing. He created Samoan jewellery bracelets, headpieces, necklaces intricate pieces shaped by generational skill. He fished the oceans of Samoa as a teenager to help sustain his family. His hands carried culture, responsibility, and pride. He still speaks about those days.

Our life now is often repetitive, quiet, and gentle. Caring for an elder with dementia requires patience, resilience, and constant presence. It is an honour, but it is also demanding.

My uncle he shared our family stories generously. When he passed away, I realised how many stories had never been recorded. I wish I could recall them clearly.

While fāgogo is rooted in the Samoan tradition of storytelling, its heart is expansive. The values that guide us are dignity, respect, care, honour, and belonging are not limited to one culture. They are human values. We welcome families from all cultural backgrounds who desire to preserve story, strengthen connection, and uphold the voices of those with stories to share.

We often assume we have time to ask, time to record, time to listen. But time does not wait, time moves forward. fāgogo is a structured and culturally grounded way to honour stories, to document wisdom, and capture your words. To inherit more than photographs, but context, history and belonging.

This work is personal. Here, stories become medicine.
